  • Distance: Around 2.5 km (one way), depending on the starting point.
  • Duration: The trek typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the pace and fitness level.

Key Attraction: Jakhoo Temple

At the summit of the hill, you'll find Jakhoo Temple, a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. According to local legend, it is believed that Lord Hanuman rested at this spot while flying to fetch the Sanjeevani herb during the Ramayana.

The temple is home to the 108-feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman, which stands out against the skyline and is visible from many parts of Shimla. It's the tallest statue of Hanuman in the world and adds a spiritual dimension to the hike.

  • Temple Timings: 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
  • Entry Fee: Free, but donations are welcome.
  • Cultural Significance: Pilgrims visit the temple for blessings and to witness the beautiful views of Shimla from the hilltop.

Getting There

  • By Foot: The hike is the most popular way to reach Jakhoo Hill, offering a chance to enjoy the natural surroundings.
  • By Taxi: You can also hire a taxi from Shimla town, which will drop you near the temple, leaving a short walk to the top.
  • By Cable Car: For those who prefer not to hike, there is a Jakhoo Ropeway that operates between the Ridge and the hilltop. This offers a scenic 5-minute ride with spectacular aerial views of Shimla and the surrounding mountains.

Best Time to Visit

  • Summer (March to June): Ideal time to visit with pleasant weather and clear skies, making the hike comfortable.
  • Monsoon (July to September): The hill and trail are lush and green, but be cautious as the path can get slippery due to rain.
  • Winter (October to February): The area is covered in snow, offering a different experience, though the trail can be slippery.

Things to See Along the Way

  • Wildlife & Nature: The trek offers chances to spot local wildlife, including birds, and enjoy the flora of the area. The forested trail is lined with deodar, pine, and oak trees.
  • Panoramic Views: The trail provides sweeping views of Shimla town, the distant Himalayan peaks, and the surrounding valleys.

Dining and Refreshments

  • On the Trail: There are small stalls along the trail that sell basic snacks and refreshments like tea, water, and light eats. These come in handy if you’re hiking on a warm day.
  • At the Top: Near the temple, you’ll also find a few stalls offering tea, coffee, and snacks. However, it's advisable to carry your own water and light snacks.

Facilities

  • Toilets: Public restrooms are available near the temple.
  • Monkeys: Beware of the large number of monkeys in the area. While they are generally harmless, they are known to snatch food, sunglasses, or other items from visitors. Avoid feeding them.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Fitness Level: Although the hike is short, the steep gradient can be challenging, so take breaks as needed.
  • Weather: Shimla's weather can be unpredictable, so carry a light jacket even in summer.
  • Monkey Caution: Hold onto your belongings tightly, especially near the temple, as the monkeys can be quite mischievous.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: Given the steep and uneven terrain, it's essential to wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
