What is Yin Yoga?
Yin yoga has been described as a “new yet ancient” style of yoga. While much of what is known about Yin yoga in the Western world today was developed in the 1980s in the USA, the practice is actually based on ancient Chinese medicine and Taoist philosophies and principles. The ancient Chinese believed that there are pathways of Qi (energy) that run through our bodies. By stretching and deepening into poses, you open up any blockages and release that energy to flow freely.
Key Characteristics
• Focus on Deep Connective Tissues: Unlike more dynamic, “Yang” styles of yoga (like Ashtanga Vinyasa) that focus on the muscles, Yin yoga targets the deep connective tissues, such as fascia, ligaments, joints, and bones.
• Slower and Meditative Practice: Yin yoga is slower and more meditative, giving you space to turn inward and tune into both your mind and the physical sensations of your body.
• Longer Pose Holds: In a Yin practice, you hold floor stretches for a minimum of 90 seconds up to about 8 or 10 minutes.
Benefits of Yin Yoga
• Physical Benefits:
• Lengthens connective tissues, increasing flexibility.
• Boosts circulation.
• Reduces stress levels.
• Mental Benefits:
• Teaches you how to breathe through discomfort.
• Helps you sit with your thoughts.
